The Arabic language is renowned for its complexity and beauty, with many words defying simple translation. As Edward Said aptly described, Arabic is an ‘athletic language’ that lends itself perfectly to poetry.
I recall a fascinating conversation with a friend, where we marveled at the nuances of certain Arabic words. ‘Ishk’ is one such term that has captivated me , its essence is difficult to convey with a single word in English. The closest approximation I’ve found is ‘passion,’ but it still falls short.
In my calligraphy collection, I celebrate these intricate words by incorporating them into abstract, layered backgrounds. This approach allows me to pay tribute to the richness of the Arabic language and the depth of words like ‘Ishk’.
