Toxic Words
Ishmael Fa
| Stand : AB03
This deeply personal and visceral self-portrait explores the corrupting physical and psychological weight of harmful language. A realistic, steady gaze anchors the center of the composition, but the face is aggressively invaded by pale, segmented, worm-like cords. With several of these structures emerging directly from the subject's mouth and toxic green, vein-like roots spreading across the skin, the piece illustrates how toxic words act as a living infection. Framed by a chaotic, claustrophobic border of searing yellow and orange, the artwork serves as a dark metaphor for how negativity—whether spoken by us or absorbed from others—takes root in our identity, suffocates authentic expression, and visibly poisons the self from the inside out.
