The Long Wait

ARTEZAAR LLC | Stand : FB08-FB09-FB10-EB01-EB02-EB03-EB04-EB05

This artwork explores the slower, quieter side of time through the extraordinary life of the Cicada. At its centre, the cicada holds a clock, symbolising the long periods of waiting, growth and transformation that often pass unnoticed. Some periodical cicadas spend 13 or 17 years underground before emerging for their brief adult lives. These prime numbers make their life cycle particularly remarkable and are represented here as markers of an almost unimaginable patience.

The roots beneath the cicada connect its journey to the tree, the silent keeper of time. During its years underground, the cicada nymph lives among the roots and feeds on xylem sap, drawing nourishment from the tree. The sap becomes a metaphor for the invisible energy that sustains growth: slowly flowing, almost imperceptibly, yet continuously moving through life.

The contrast between the slow movement of sap and the ticking clock reflects how differently time can feel.
